Texas Tech’s Biology Department Cited For Using Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Measurements During Hiring Process – Now In Hot Water

The biology department of Texas Tech University has been including hiring candidates' diversity, equity and inclusion score in helping determine who is deemed a better fit for employment but was ordered to stop. Now the Texas Governor's office is involved.

Lubbock, TX: Texas Tech University is under scrutiny after it was revealed by a conservative advocacy group that one of their departments has been including a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) rating system into their hiring process.

It has been discovered by the National Association of Scholars that Texas Tech’s biology department has been assessing hiring candidates' knowledge and application of DEI.

The biology department measures traditional candidate skills like prior performance records, quality of research and overall teaching ability. They also consider any letters of recommendation as a testament to their potential as a full time staff member.

However, Texas Tech’s biology department has also included the candidates' understanding of DEI and if and how they have acted on that information in the past. Their DEI measuring tool has entered into their rubric to help determine a candidate's overall suitability for any open positions.

A rubric are scales in which the criteria used for assessment are clearly spelled out. It generally aids in determining which item or person is most suitable for the categories laid out in the rubric – sometimes assigning a numerical value.

But their tactics have come under fire by the university and have reached the Texas Governor's office.

Texas Tech Responds

As a response to the findings, Texas Tech officials released a statement stating that they will remove any other DEI evaluation practices if they are discovered elsewhere within the university.

Colleges and universities are often the most progressive with social changes and awareness of sensitive political issues. There has been an overall increase in higher education asking its employee candidates about their views on diversion, equity and inclusion. However, Texas Tech appears to draw a clearer line on what is important for candidates to have.

In their statement, Texas Tech said, “Texas Tech University’s faculty hiring practices will always emphasize disciplinary excellence and the ability of candidates to support our priorities in student success, impactful scholarship, and community engagement.”

There is also growing support from the conservative community to challenge any higher education’s DEI pursuits during the hiring process, labeling it as discriminatory.

“It’s no more appropriate to ask them if they’re a Christian or Muslim. When we find out something like that has occurred, we stop it,” said Tedd Mitchell, Texas Tech University System Chancellor.

It has also garnered the attention of the governor’s office. In a letter sent from Texas Gov. Abbott’s office, it reminded all state agencies and public universities that it is illegal to include DEI in the hiring process.
