Social Justice Warriors Forgot One Important Group When They Forced NFL Team’s Name Change

A Native American group threatens to boycott NFL’s Washington “Commanders” over change from Redskins.

Last year, the then-Washington Redskins were browbeaten by social justice warriors, primarily those suffering from perceived “white guilt,” and changed the team’s nickname from Redskins to Commanders. Now, a Native American group is asking the team to change the name back.

In a letter earlier this month, the Native American Guardians Association asked the team to change the name, threatening a “Bud Light”-like boycott if they do not.

“Should we need to encourage a national boycott similar to what happened with [Bud Light parent company] Anheuser Busch, which is now down $27 billion (note not one brick thrown, not one highway blocked, not one bridge burned)—WE WILL DO JUST THAT,” the letter read.

The Washington football club was forced to change the team’s name and mascot, with some complaining that it was detrimental to Native Americans. In a similar move, the MLB’s Cleveland Indians were also forced to change the team’s name and mascot, in that case, to the Guardians.

Bud Light, which hired a man who pretends to be a teenage girl, Dylan Mulvaney, to be its spokesman during March Madness, has continued to bleed revenue after a consumer boycott, suffering nearly a $400 million loss in the second quarter. The $27 billion loss reflects Anheuser Busch’s market cap loss.

In the letter sent to the Commanders, Eunice Davidson, the group’s founder and president, highlighted a poll that found 90% of Native Americans had no problem with the Redskins nickname.

The group pointed out that other sports teams, in particular the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs and the Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL, have kept their Native American-inspired monikers, with the understanding that the names carry “an obligation of honor and respect.”

“At this moment in history, we are formally requesting that the team revitalize its relationship with the American Indian community by (i) changing the name back to ‘The Redskins, ’ which recognizes America’s original inhabitants, and (ii) using the team’s historic name and legacy to encourage Americans to learn about, not cancel, the history of America’s tribes and our role in the founding of this Great Nation,” the letter continued.

The group is circulating an online petition asking the Commanders to change its name back to the Redskins, which was cited in the letter. As of a week or so ago, the petition had gathered over 67,000 signatures.
