Another Win for DeSantis as New College of Florida Abolishes Gender Studies Department

Earlier this year, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis overhauled the board of trustees.

In 1995, the New College of Florida established a gender studies department. Last week by a vote of 7-3, the board of trustees sent the department packing. The move is the latest in an attempt to overhaul the college’s mission, the Washington Examiner reported.

One of those appointed to the board is Chris Rufo, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute. Rufo has been one of the most outspoken critics of critical race theory and radical gender theory. Rufo noted the decision made the college “the first public university in America to begin rolling back the encroachment of queer theory and gender pseudoscience into academic life.”

In an op-ed published for City Journal, Rufo explained it was necessary to eliminate the department to comply with the college’s mission to revert to a “classical liberal arts education” and noted the concepts included in the gender studies program “are explicitly opposed to the classical conceptions of the true, the good, and the beautiful.”

“The decision of the New College board of trustees to initiate the termination of the university’s gender studies program sets a new historical precedent,” Rufo wrote. “Academia’s continued decline is not inevitable. Civic-minded leaders, deriving their power from the people, can use legislation, appointments, and board governance to reorient public universities away from left-wing nihilism and, once again, toward higher principles.”

The board’s decision affirms the decision by Florida’s governor to wade into the culture wars and divest the college of the scourge of woke ideology. Aside from their recent vote, the board previously fired the university president, replacing him with the former Florida education commissioner, who happens to be a DeSantis ally. That led a number of faculty members to leave the college, further cleansing it of the stain of leftist garbage.

As expected, liberal groups were apoplectic about the decision to eliminate the department. That means DeSantis and the board of trustees were right over the target. One group, PEN America, called the board’s decision “the ultimate violation of academic freedom.” That freedom, of course, is only important when it expresses leftist ideology. Which means New College of Florida is on the right path.
