Adding Insult to Injury, Duke Energy’s Woke Policies Hitting Consumers

North Carolina electric customers being punished as Duke Energy prioritizes woke ESG agenda.

North Carolina-based electric company Duke Energy is being slammed for prioritizing the company’s “woke” policies, with critics saying the company’s priority on furthering a “climate agenda” is driving up consumer costs.

A consumer protection group, Consumers’ Research, drafted a letter to the North Carolina Utilities Commission in which they sharply criticized the company’s priorities.

“As the nation’s oldest consumer protection organization, Consumers’ Research’s purpose is to educate consumers on issues that impact them and amplify their voice in the marketplace,” organization director Will Hild wrote in a letter.

“It is for this reason that we implore the commission to put an end to the abuse of North Carolina consumers by Duke Energy.”

In a post on X Thursday, Hild wrote that Duke Energy isn’t trying to hide what they are doing. He said Duke Energy “admitted (and even bragged about) the fact that they are increasing prices on American families to fund their ESG [environmental, social and governance] To-Do List.”

That campaign would impact some 2.8 million residents in North Carolina. Townhall says Duke has a “near monopoly on energy in North Carolina.”

Sources say that Duke’s obsession with pursuing “net-zero” emissions has seen the company move away from more reliable and affordable energy sources, such as coal and natural gas, and toward more expensive and less reliable sources—wind and solar. This has resulted in a rise in consumer costs, with predictions saying those costs will increase by nearly 20% over the next three years.

In a March interview, Duke Energy CEO Lynn Good said fighting alleged “climate change” and reducing carbon emissions was a fundamental component of their business model, according to Hild.

“Their business model should be delivering affordable and reliable energy to their consumers,” Hild said of Good’s interview. “And it says something that the CEO sees that as the core of their mission, rather than focusing (primarily) on consumers.”

Consumers’ Research’s campaign against Duke Energy continues its mission to out ESG policies pursued by the corporate elite. In 2021, for example, they targeted BlackRock and Bank of America for their obsession with ESG policies.

In the case of Duke, Hild took Duke to task for the anti-consumer focus of their business model.

“Perhaps the most abusive use of Duke’s resources has been their political advocacy of anti-consumer ‘net zero’ policies, which they boast about supporting at both the national and state level,” Hild wrote.

“It is a clear conflict of interest for Duke Energy to expend company resources supporting the enactment of policies that increase costs for Duke at the same time they ask [for] those costs to be passed on to their customers in the form of rate hikes,” he added.

Also included in Duke’s ESG initiatives is the support of the radical LGBTQ agenda. According to Hild, Duke sponsored a “Youth Pride Carnival” in 2022. Included in that event was a “King and Queen Drag Show” that the event page bragged “was intended for children as young as 12.”

“If Duke Energy executives want to engage in the pushing of transgender ideology on 6th graders, they should do it on their own time and dime,” Hild said. “Consumers should not be forced to subsidize the targeting of their own children with transgender indoctrination.”

Unfortunately, most North Carolina residents have little choice regarding energy providers, which is why monopolies such as Duke Energy should be dismantled. Unlike many states, that state does not currently allow for a competitive market for energy suppliers. There is an organization, Energy Justice NC, seeking to change that.
