University of North Carolina Eliminates DEI Statement Requirement

In an effort to prevent woke ideology from further intruding into school operations, the University of North Carolina voted to ban diversity, equity and inclusion statements as part of the hiring process.

Fayetteville, NC: The University of North Carolina has made a decision to remove the requirement of having applicants fill out a diversity, equity and inclusion statement that was previously considered during the hiring process.

UNC, like many universities and colleges across the nation, has a strong liberal presence within its curriculum and its staff and student population.

And the decision to eliminate DEI statements came after the Board of Trustees voted to create the School of Civic Life and Leadership, a sub-program designed to highlight and promote ideas and theories solely from a politically conservative approach. The goal of the program is to offer students the opportunity to pursue subjects and courses with a conservative foundation to counter the traditional liberally focused curriculum.

David Boliek, chairman of the Board of Trustees said in an interview with Fox News, "This is all about balance. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill clearly has a world-class faculty that exists and teaches students and creates leaders of the future. We however have no shortage of left-of-center progressive views on our campus, like many campuses across the nation. But at the same time, the same really can't be said about right-of-center views. This is an effort to try to remedy that with the School of Civic Life and Leadership."

As the follow up move to the new program, UNC decided to remove the DEI statement from the hiring process.

The UNC Policy

According to the board, the university "shall neither solicit nor require an employee or applicant for academic admission or employment to affirmatively ascribe to or opine about beliefs, affiliations, ideals, or principles regarding matters of contemporary political debate or social action as a condition to admission, employment, or professional advancement."

For an applicant, he or she cannot "be solicited or required to describe his or her actions in support of, or in opposition to, such beliefs, affiliations, ideals, or principles."

The university continued, "practices prohibited here include but are not limited to solicitations or requirements for statements of commitment to particular views on matters of contemporary political debate or social action contained on applications or qualifications for admission or employment included as criteria for analysis of an employee's career progression."

It is speculated by others in the higher education community that UNC, the oldest university in the country, is trying to create a more politically and socially balanced approach to teaching, learning, hiring, promoting, etc.
